Cupping

What is cupping? Cupping therapy is an ancient healing technique used that places cups, either silicone, glass, or plastic, over the skin to create negative pressure through suction. This suction created improves the flow of energy and balance, increases blood circulation, relieves muscle tension, and increases muscle mobility. Even Michael Phelps, The Rock, and Kim Kardashian use cupping!

How does cupping work? During an active range of motion cupping therapy session, the therapist will place cups on a specific part of the body and walk you through certain exercises or motions. The suction created from the cups draws fluid into the area and helps promote healing. The cups will stay in one place for 5-10 minutes.

Does cupping bruise? Cupping may cause temporary marks on the skin that are similar to bruises. The marks help your therapist to know where exactly you are having issues and the severity. The darker the mark, the more stagnant fluids were brought up during treatment. The marks can last up to 14 days.

What should I wear to an active cupping therapy session? First and foremost, just like getting a massage, wear whatever you’re most comfortable in! We recommend wearing shorts or pants that can easily roll up, a tank top, a sports bra, or an easily adjustable shirt for back and neck accessibility.

What should I do after a cupping session? After your session, just like getting a massage, drink PLENTY of water. We usually say to try to double whatever you normally drink if you’re a good water drinker. Otherwise, try for at least 8 to 10 cups. Hydrating before AND after a cupping session helps give you the best experience and to help flush out toxins. You should try to take it easy, too, as you could feel a little more tired than usual or make you a bit sore. This is normal and can be avoided with plenty of water intake.

Facial Cupping

No, facial cupping does NOT cause cupping marks if done correctly by a certified cupper/therapist. Facial cupping uses special facial cups; they are smaller than normal cups. Facial cupping pulls away from deeper layers of fascia to increase blood flow and rejuvenate the skin. Facial cups may also be used to help with sinus relief, headache treatments, and TMJ treatments.
